The Thyroid is important in many developmental processes for a growing foetus

The World Health Organisation say "Iodine is essential for healthy brain development in the fetus and young child. A woman’s iodine requirements increase substantially during pregnancy to ensure adequate supply to the fetus." Supplementation in both pregnancy and lactation are recomended, especially if you live in an area of the world where salt iodisation is not common.
"Iodine is an essential nutrient required for the biosynthesis of thyroid hormones, which are responsible for regulating growth, development & metabolism." Because the need for iodine increases during pregnancy, if we do not increase the levels we consume, or if we do not supplement our levels of iodine, it is more likely that we may become deficient as we use up what we have available far quicker. 
If increased iodine requirements are not met, the production of thyroid hormones may decrease and therefore be inadequate for maternal, fetal & infant needs.

The cochrane review (Harding et al., “Iodine Supplementation for Women during the Preconception, Pregnancy and Postpartum Period.” 2017) found that women who supplemented with Iodine were less likely to develop postpartum hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid gland, after giving birth).
However, the results for raised thyroid antibodies and hypothyroidism seemed unaffected!
As a mind body detective, and from a naturopathic point of view, this would make sense, as the 'root causes' of each of these would likely be different!
